Development Associate

 

The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) is a member-based charity situated on a 150-acre, urban nature preserve on the shores of the Credit River in central Mississauga.  Our programs and services invite people of all cultures, ages, and abilities to connect with nature and encourage learning about the importance of protecting, conserving and restoring natural spaces for the well-being of future generations.

For this permanent, full-time position we are seeking a seasoned generalist with an affinity for The Riverwood Conservancy’s mission and a proven track record of success. Working with a small team of fundraising and communications staff, you will take the lead on event planning and management and play an important role in TRC’s ongoing solicitation and donor stewardship activities. This position reports to the Director of Development and Communications, and will include extensive teamwork with our dynamic team of fifteen staff, as well as volunteers and members of the Board of Directors.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Fund Development: assist with development of TRC’s individual major gift program; assist with major gift cultivation and solicitation strategies; research and write grant proposals to a variety of foundations, corporate donors, and sponsors; and develop sponsorship agreements.

 

  • Special Events: lead the organization and delivery of TRC cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising events; support the delivery of program events including integration of fundraising goals; secure event sponsorships; manage event volunteers; analyze event outcomes and effectiveness; and act as main liaison to the City of Mississauga for event-related matters.

 

  • Donor Recognition: follow up on sponsor agreements and liaise with relevant staff to ensure fulfillment of commitments; investigate and implement creative ways to thank donors; and work with communications staff to develop and deliver coordinated marketing, fundraising and appreciation messages for various channels.

 

  • Donor Relations: maintain ongoing contact with a portfolio of donors; act as the organizational lead for legacy/planned giving and tribute plaque programs; complete donor recognition calls and other direct communications; and support planning and implementation of ongoing refinements to the TRC donor journey

Competencies and Skills Required:

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and problem-solve on an ongoing basis
  • Affinity for working with program staff to develop funding priorities and projects
  • Experience working with volunteers and Board members
  • Ability to manage confidential information
  • Ability to develop and follow budgets
  • Familiarity with special event planning and implementation, including permit requirements
  • Granting experience, including research and proposal writing
  • Experience working in a collaborative “small shop” development setting is ideal
  • Familiarity with membership programs and/or planned giving are assets
  • Positive and enthusiastic approach to work

Qualifications:

  • Three to five years resource development experience with proven track record in stewardship, solicitation and cultivation and events management
  • University or college degree in fund development, communications or related field, or equivalent combination of related work experience and education
  • Understanding of and passion for The Riverwood Conservancy mission
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective fund development strategies and processes
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar donor management software
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Adept at time management, planning, prioritizing, multi-tasking and follow- through
  • CFRE designation or commitment to working toward it are considered an asset
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as required.
