Director, Development
THE OPPORTUNITY
Ivey Business School, renowned for its excellence in business education and research, is seeking a self-starting, strategic, and dynamic fundraiser to join the Advancement department as the new Director, Development.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Advancement, the Director, Development will be an experienced and decisive leader, overseeing a high-performing team of 13 professionals currently raising philanthropic and sponsorship funds of $15 million annually. The team will also focus on future growth under the Directors’ leadership with an exciting campaign currently in the planning stage that will be the largest in the School’s history.
The Director, Development will play a pivotal role in driving revenue growth in support of Ivey’s key priorities by effectively managing a personal portfolio of high-capacity prospects; leading a growing and capable team responsible for comprehensive fundraising streams; and collaborating with the Executive Director, Advancement in the development and implementation of strategies that build sustainable and growing programs.
The ideal candidate will build strong relationships with team members, colleagues, faculty, volunteers and donors, inspiring and motivating them to achieve new heights through philanthropy.
The salary range for this position is $150,000 – $170,000 per annum, plus 20% performance-based compensation and a comprehensive suite of benefits. This position is offered on a 3-year renewable contract and can be based in the Greater Toronto Area or London, Ontario. If based in the GTA, regular travel to the Ivey Business School campus in London, Ontario can be expected. Additionally, this role will require travel within North America and Internationally.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Portfolio Management – 50 %
- Manage a portfolio of assigned major gift prospects, and select planned gift prospects, providing strategic and tactical direction to the definition and successful pursuit of projected gift targets.
- Cultivate and solicit support from donors, both individually and/or in collaboration with the Dean, Associate Dean, senior faculty and campaign volunteers.
Development Strategy – 25%
- With the Executive Director, develop and implement the overall strategy for the major gift development programs, managing the implementation of those strategies and reaching annual and campaign goals for funding priorities.
- With the Executive Director and the anticipated Campaign Director, support the development of all aspects of Campaign planning, execution, and volunteer management.
- Manage the major gift development team to effectively deliver services and achieve both team and individual objectives.
- Working with the Associate Director, Development, oversee the development and implementation of the overall strategy for the Leadership and Annual Giving Programs that attract sustainable growth in unrestricted gifts from each of the School’s constituencies.
Stewardship & Recognition – 10%
- Working with the Associate Director, Stewardship, accountable to implement and manage comprehensive stewardship & recognition strategies, designed to deepen the donor’s relationship with the School and engage major gift prospects in the School’s activities, which include individual stewardship plans for major gift donors, managing major gift pledge collection and coordination of key events.
Leadership – 15%
- Inspire, motivate, and lead a team of high-performing individuals.
- Effectively recruit and develop talent of the Development team, managing performance and achieving goals.
- Oversee and support the development and production of effective donor-focused collaterals, proposals, and cases for support and support the Communication team’s efforts to benchmark for excellence and maintain collateral libraries.
- Proactively collaborate with the Directors of Alumni Relations and Operations to ensure alignment among the teams and find opportunities to work together to support their goals and the overarching goals of the Advancement team.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- A seasoned fundraiser with experience in management of a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects, and successfully closing $1 million+ gifts.
- Experience building and leading teams with the ability to motivate staff to achieve the goals of the Development Department; developing and retaining talent; and creating a positive work environment.
- Involvement with campaign fundraising; recruiting, training and engaging senior-level volunteers for major gift fundraising success.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships across an organization with peers, colleagues and faculty (or the like), while growing and promoting a culture of philanthropy.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire confidence and trust in alumni, friends and corporate and foundation stakeholders.
- Superior listening skills and the ability to interpret the concerns and interests of potential stakeholders and translate them into attractive opportunities for investment in the School’s development priorities.
- Exposure to and experience collaborating with communications colleagues, and an understanding of stewardship frameworks, customized experiences, proposal development and impact reporting.
- Sophisticated grasp of direct mail/telemarketing techniques and related methods for building and sustaining annual support from a broad cross-section of Ivey Business School alumni and other constituencies.
- Ability to organize and manage a diverse range of assignments and projects with high efficiency, yet thorough attention to detail and follow through.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Resourceful and independent, but comfortable working within the framework of an integrated development program and team-oriented environment.
- Appreciation of the mission, purpose and values of a comprehensive university and, more particularly, a teaching business school and its responsiveness to the educational and research requirements of a sophisticated international business community.
- Experience working within the post-secondary education sector or a complex, multi-level environment is preferred.
- Ability to participate in regular meetings and events at Ivey Business School in London, Ontario, as well as travel to the US and Internationally.
