Position Overview

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director (IED) of this grassroots organization will oversee the day-to-day management of the team and operations. An experienced leader in the non-profit sector is required to lead the operations and prepare the organization for its permanent leader.

As the organization is undergoing transitional changes, one of the key focuses includes the leadership of the team, ensuring they feel supported, addressing questions and concerns, conducting staff assessments, aligning activities with organizational mandates, policies and procedures.

The IED is responsible for providing organizational leadership that will assure the continuation and appropriate evolution of: Leadership and Human Resources Oversight; Financial Oversight; Stakeholder Management; and Board Governance support. The IED will maintain appropriate working relationships and regular communications with the Board of Directors, staff, funders, sponsors and partners.

The key mandate for this term is as follows:

  • Lead and manage the current team and operations onsite for a minimum of four (4) days per week.
  • Review the organization’s key roles and job descriptions and make recommendations to make certain the organization’s mandate is fulfilled.
  • Continue internal education of staff to ensure a thorough understanding of the non-profit’s mission/mandate.
  • Provide steady leadership during the 6-month term to prepare the organization for new permanent leadership.
  • At the end of the term, prepare recommendations and observations for improvement and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage the Organization

  • Provide strong leadership to all staff, guests, volunteers, donors and members of the organization by adhering to the organization’s mission and mandate, by offering a grounded and firm but friendly leadership style that includes active listening, clear communication and sound judgement.
  • Assume responsibility for the organization’s day-to-day operations, including financial management and management of all staff.
  • Manage the business affairs of the organization, maintain policies and processes to ensure the integrity of the organization’s internal controls.
  • With assistance from staff, ensure the maintenance of fundraising efforts and the funding applications for government grants.
  • Supervise, support, coach and evaluate all direct reports.
  • Deal effectively as required with employee performance as appropriate.
  • Ensure and nurture an effective staff team culture.

Provide Financial Oversight

  • Working with the senior staff and accountant to make sure the financial statements are produced as required and monitor revenues and expenses.
  • Maintain proper financial records per Revenue Canada and funders.
  • Ensure all financial responsibilities of the agency are fulfilled.
  • Liaise with funders and partners regarding new initiatives.

Provide Oversight for the Organization’s Programs

  • Oversee the current staff in their work as it relates to all programming and activities and especially flagship events. Ensure that all events are happening as planned by staff.
  • Maintain current partnerships.

Oversee Corporate Governance Matters

  • Oversee the implementation of corporate governance principles applicable to the organization, maintain documentation relating to the organization’s charitable status and/or taxation laws and ensure that all government files are appropriately submitted within required deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the Board Chair in the setting of Board agendas and updates.
  • Maintain an effective communication link with the Chair and the Board as a whole while ensuring that the Board is kept appropriately informed of the organization’s overall business operations and major issues.
  • Ensure that an open and positive climate exists between the organization and its stakeholders.
  • Support the Board in all Board meetings, preparation and execution. This will include Board Committees. The Board meets six times per year.

Our client (its Board of Directors) is looking for an interim leader with the following attributes:

  • Minimum of 8 years of leadership experience in a senior management role in the non-profit sector.
  • Strong management experience leading teams of 10 or more people.
  • Proven ability and experience in the areas of non-profit management, financial and human resource management, operational review and implementation of new protocols.
  • Board governance understanding or previous experience reporting to a non-profit board.
  • Excellent experience of oversight of operational issues.
  • Confident and inclusive leader with no ego.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, critical analysis and relationship-building skills.
  • A post-secondary degree or equivalent.

Asset:

  • Brings interim leadership experience in a non-profit organization OR track record as Executive Director of a non-profit organization.

What our client offers:

  • Annualized compensation of $119,000+.
  • A contracted employee relationship with the organization for approximately 6 months.
